The Staten Island Ferry- the best views of New York

Published by veno under Amazing

The state of New York is the third most populated state in the USA. It is home to the famous Empire State Building, at one point the tallest building in the world, the Stock Exchange which drives the financial cogs of America, one of the most iconic monuments in the world: the statue of Liberty. The state of New York is a veritable melting pot of cultures and ethnicities ranging from Italians, Irish and more recently Chinese and Indian. This leads to the mention of another New York attraction known as Ellis Island, originally the main facility where immigrants were received when they arrived in New York. More than 12 million immigrants passed through its doors before its closure and conversion into a national monument to be viewed by the public.

The Staten Island Ferry service is one the most endearing transport services present in New York connecting Staten Island with Manhattan Island. The service has been in operation since the 1700s, the first motorised ferry was brought into operation in 1817. The Staten Island Ferry runs 24 hours a day and is a free service provided by the state. The ferry ride itself is popular with tourists as it offers amazing views of the cityscape and the Statue of Liberty during its 25 minute journey to either island.

The Staten Island Ferry has made several appearances in popular media over the years appearing in many television shows and movies. More recently it has appeared in movies such as “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days”, “American Gangster”, and “Batman The Dark Knight”. In television the ferry service has gotten mentions on Friends, been featured on the hit television show Sex and the City, revolved around the plot of an episode on the popular Law and Order television series and gets regular exposure on the CSI New York series.

The Staten Island Ferry offers a unique perspective on the cityscape of New York allowing visitors to marvel at the beauty of this thriving cosmopolitan city and its rich history and strong personality. The Millennium UN Plaza Hotel New York is a hotel in midtown New York situated next to the head quarters of the United Nations in Manhattans trendy East Side. La Ink: La Ink Star Says She’s “not an Amazing Tattoo Artist”

Published by veno under Amazing

The TLC reality television series LA Ink, a spin-off of its predecessor series Miami Ink, has managed to grant its cast of tattoo experts a certain degree of popularity. However, resident shop manager Pixie Acia is averse to the idea of making any grand claim to that fame. She says that while being on the show has made her more easily recognizable, she doesn’t consider it an accurate measure of how well-known she is. During an interview, the 26-year-old veteran of the body art industry recalled how the people around her kept asking her about the effects of fame, just from being on the show.

Acia said that she considered it amusing because she did not view it as being about real fame. She claimed that people didn’t recognize her because she had, in her own words, any amazing talent. Acia further went on to say that she was not an amazing tattoo artist, nor an actress of note, and that she never really aspired towards the performing arts in that respect. She also said that it felt somewhat unusual for her, and it gave her the sensation of being lost somewhere in the middle. On the other hand, the shop manager acknowledged that her prominent fellow co-worker Kat Von D had become quite well-known and successful herself.

However, Acia contended that Kat Von D did not achieve her fame simply from appearing on television in LA Ink and Miami Ink, but because she’d managed to distinguish herself in an industry traditionally dominated by their male counterparts. Acia further continued to downplay her own personal role, and said she was easily replaceable. She made the clear distinction between fame gained from being exceptionally talented, and fame gained simply from being seen on a TV show. One thing that Acia misses from life before the series, however, is her job at a diner called Swingers.

“The Amazing Race” with a Twist of Reality

Published by veno under Amazing

Like the popular show, the Amazing Race, COMPETITOURS designed a travel experience where two people per team are sent on a secret trip to Europe to earn points by accomplishing a series of fun, quirky and interactive challenges, documented via their own video cam for the COMPETITOURS judges to score.
The company’s judges will pick the winners based on the task recordings

And after a fun, fulfilling vacation, you may also win the prize? A worldwide travel spree grand prize of future airline tickets and hotel nights, which are valued at up to $16,000., featuring up to 40 nights at over 115 Starwood hotels spanning 51 exotic countries, plus airfare and spending money, makes the trip just THAT much more fun.

Creator Steve Belkin, notes this “Amazing Race for regular people” takes its participants throughout Europe lasting 8-14 days. Armed with a Eurail pass, a video camera and their own sense of creativity, these competitors compete in five offbeat challenges a day.

“Each team can determine their own mix of mainstream vs. niche daily itineraries. Some teams might be cynical about the Eiffel Tower while others consider it must-see. So, each team will customize their challenge choices to best meet their personal travel and touring preferences” explains Belkin.

“Competitasks”
MAINSTREAM – bustling big cities bursting with culture, food, shopping, must-see sites and must-do activities (think Rome, Stockholm, Budapest, London and everywhere in between)

NICHE – under the radar cool spots, too inconvenient for the package tours and too much research for the backpacker crowd (think ethnic enclaves in big cities, bleeding edge technology exhibits, KGB museums, poison beer recipes)

TIMELESS – rural village life where tradition and craftsmanship are still revered (think castle-lined rivers, 16th century Hatfeld & McCoys and other myths and legends, skulls as art, cuckoo clocks as passion)

AWE-INSPIRING – Europe is blessed with a diversity of natural assets (think summer skiing, river kayaking, biking through wine country, ice caving, hiking the Alps)
The CURIOUS:
Visit an African immigrant market while in Brussels and ask the locals to help you find:

Examples of Challenges:
- Head to the top of the Eiffel Tower and gather 15 tourists together to record them doing a 30-second version of the can-can.

- Visit a graffiti-filled remnant of the Berlin Wall and shoot a video as an art critic trying to provide a ‘meaningful’ interpretation to the graffiti…be serious, silly, sarcastic, whatever

- Visit a West African market to find a Church that conducts services in Swahili, learn and sing a hymn in the native tongue

This Editors Thoughts:

Having never watched the Amazing Race, when I first read about Producer and COMPETITOURS creator, Steve Belkin’s new company, I was immediately intrigued. As a 15+ year veteran of the travel industry, I found the concept of traveling with a mission to discover or create the unexpected a brilliant way to enjoy the culture, history and nuances of a new destination. The challenges allow the competitors to discover places, history and mingle with locals, something they may not have done on their own.

Friends, family members, partners and new traveling companions will create memories and bonds that are priceless.

The brilliance is in the self discovery that takes place during such a competition in unknown destinations and cultures.

I am in the travel industry as an editor of a free travel newsletter and ofcoruse, I love to travel. Members of our newsletter email me questions for travel advice all the time, so I thought it would be fun to start a travel forum on Gather. Ask me questions – ask me for deals on places you would like to go to! I know where to find them and I have also personally travelled extensively.

My job is to find the best deals available for our newsletter and let people know about our newsletter. What is really cool is that we come across every kind of travel from a Caribbean Cruise, to a hotel in California, to an exotic adventure trip to South America, Asia, etc..
